A proper Hayling Island pub, curios and all
From the road it is a handsome white brick house with dark green window frames, lanterns either side of the porch and a painted yew on the wall. Step inside and the collecting starts: copper pans and jugs along the top shelf, brass bells, a stuffed fox and hound keeping an eye on the bar, old photographs of the pub in its earlier lives, and a leather fire bucket hanging from the lounge ceiling.
The lounge is the place to settle in. Deep red leather chesterfields, patterned carpets, floral curtains, a cuckoo clock and a model steamer on the sill. In winter the fireplace gets going and fairy lights go up across the ceiling; in summer the doors open onto the garden.
Whether the tall evergreen standing beside the car park is the original yew is a question best put to the regulars.
